This Day in Wrestling History

On this day in 1992, the 5th annual SummerSlam will take place in all places, England, and front and center of over 80,000 screaming fans from all over the world. This would be the exact point when SummerSlam became a huge PPV for the company and would be called one of the Big 4 PPVs. It's here when SummerSlam would become an extravaganza of the summer.

Some notable matches on the card:

  1. Legion of Doom, riding the motorcycles down to the ring, beat I.R.S and Ted DiBase

  2. The Model Rick Martel and Shawn Michaels fought to a draw

  3. Warrior defeats Champion Macho Man by count-out after Ric Flair attacks Savage.

However, the reason almost every Brit around came to this show was to watch the match between Hitman Bret Hart and the British Bulldog Davey Boy Smith. What we would be given was the match of the night and the only time the Intercontinental Championship would ever be the main event of one of the big 4. We had Davey Boy, who was a powerhouse wrestler, and Bret, who was the mat technician. The lead-up to this match was how these two brothers-in-law would be competitive but also be family.

For over 25 minutes these men exchanged blow for blow and move for move. We would see what was the beginning of Bret as one of the best technicians and would eventually be a leader in and out of the ring while we saw the beginnings of The British Bulldog as not only a powerhouse but also a legitimate singles wrestler.

In the end, it was The British Bulldog that would reverse Bret's sunset flip and score the pin, ending the 2nd reign of Bret as the IC champion but also see Davey Boy win in his home country and the home fans.
