AFW Magazine News Weekly Update

Swerve Strickland said AJ Styles is more than capable of making the jump to AEW.

“At this point, I think I’m becoming something that AJ Styles wants to compete against, instead. I’m pushing myself to be at the top of this game. I’m not chasing after anybody’s matches. I want those matches to chase after me. Happy for AJ, proud of AJ. He’s someone I would study endlessly, alongside Bryan Danielson and that era. Nigel (McGuinness), I looked up to those guys and watched those guys. AJ has earned more than enough in his career to walk away from it or continue on and do something different and unique with the generation of guys he has curated and spawned. His influence spawned an AEW style. (Will) Ospreay, Seth Rollins, myself, Mike Bailey, we’ve all watched and studied AJ. If he wants to take a chance to come to AEW, which he is more than capable and in great shape mentally, hopefully, and physically, from what I view, to compete with All Elite Wrestling. We’re all here, open and waiting if he decides to make that jump.” (Monopoly Events)

A New Chapter of Clarity: Dustin Rhodes and the Power of Resilience

Dustin Rhodes recently shared a poignant reflection on his journey of sobriety, reminding the wrestling community of the strength found in vulnerability. Rhodes noted that seeing clearly for the first time since getting clean and sober is an experience unlike any other—a sentiment that resonates deeply with fans who have followed his storied career through both its peaks and valleys.

His message serves as a beacon of hope for anyone currently lost in the "fog" of struggle. Dustin emphasizes that admitting the need for help is the ultimate act of courage, whether that support comes from faith, a program, or a community of friends. His advice to those struggling today is urgent and clear: work for your life as if it depends on it, because it truly does. As Rhodes enters this latest chapter of his career, he remains living proof that a person’s best days can still lie ahead, no matter how long the road behind them has been.

Respect Recognizes Respect: The "Samoan Werewolf" and The "Phenomenal One"

Jacob Fatu has established himself as one of the most terrifying forces in WWE, but a recent appearance on Busted Open Radio showed a humbler side of the "Samoan Werewolf." Fatu took the time to publicly thank AJ Styles for a backstage confidence boost regarding his physical transformation. According to Fatu, Styles pulled him aside to question why he was still wearing a shirt during his matches despite his incredible conditioning.

Fatu noted that when a legend like Styles—who is currently navigating his own retirement journey—tells you to showcase your hard work, you listen. This mutual respect highlights the locker room leadership Styles has provided throughout his tenure. Speaking of retirement, AJ Styles recently clarified his timeline, noting that while he originally considered hanging it up at WrestleMania 41, he felt he owed it to himself and the fans to stay a bit longer following his recovery from a near career-ending foot injury. Styles expressed a desire to leave on his own terms, ideally at the same premium live event where he made his iconic debut.

The Evolution of the Women’s Division: Blake Monroe and Marie Malenko

The WWE women’s division continues to be the most talked-about roster in the business. Blake Monroe recently opened up about her decision to sign with the company, citing the sheer depth of talent as a primary motivator. Monroe, who has quickly become a standout in NXT, dismissed the pressure of "Match of the Year" expectations, focusing instead on the long-term goal of refining her craft at the Performance Center.

While Monroe solidifies her spot, the next generation is already knocking on the door. Marie Malenko, daughter of the legendary "Man of a Thousand Holds" Dean Malenko, was spotted at the WWE tryouts this week. Carrying one of the most respected surnames in technical wrestling history, her presence has fans buzzing about a potential revival of world-class technical wrestling in the division.

The "Falcon" Lands in Florida: Ulka Sasaki Joins the PC

The WWE Performance Center is welcoming international flair as Pro Wrestling NOAH’s Ulka Sasaki has officially begun his excursion training in Florida. After an intense and physical send-off match against the legendary KENTA, the "Falcon" is looking to evolve his style within the American system.

Sasaki’s arrival marks a significant bridge between the US and Japanese wrestling scenes. The goal of this excursion is for Ulka to level up his hybrid MMA-inspired style, with many expecting him to return to the green mat of NOAH as a completely different monster. We’ll be watching closely to see how his grappling background translates to the WWE style.

Mick Foley: Hollywood Icon and The Hardcore Legend

Mick Foley is proving once again that his storytelling ability transcends the squared circle. The "Hardcore Legend" recently shared on social media that he met with a top Hollywood executive to discuss adapting one of his stories into a feature film. Foley took care to clarify that this project is entirely separate from the previously announced biopic currently in development.

This new film would be a unique story inspired by his real-life experiences, and Foley even teased the possibility of portraying himself on screen. Meanwhile, Paul Walter Hauser—a noted wrestling fanatic and Emmy winner—recently confirmed he is attached to play Foley in an upcoming limited series based on the legend’s life. Between the biopic, the limited series, and this new feature film, fans of Mrs. Foley's Baby Boy have plenty to look forward to. Have a nice day!

AEW: Swerve Strickland’s Dark Descent

Over in AEW, the atmosphere has turned cold following the absolute "snapping" of Swerve Strickland. What began as a 20-minute technical masterpiece against Kenny Omega on Dynamite ended in a scene of pure horror. After securing the win with a clinical House Call, Swerve didn't celebrate; instead, he chose carnage.

With the help of a chain from Prince Nana, Swerve brutally hung Omega over the ring ropes, ignoring the desperate pleas for mercy from Bryan Danielson at the commentary table. The assault culminated with Swerve planting Omega through the announce table with a devastating Deadeye. This ruthless shift in persona signals a terrifying new era for the "Realest & “Most Dangerous” man in the game, as he embraces a heel turn that has the entire roster on edge. Story line wise this act cost him a $100,000 dollar fine from AEW

Elimination Chamber: Blackouts and Wild Cards in Chicago

As we look toward Elimination Chamber at the United Center, WWE is implementing a controversial "blackout" strategy, blocking local watch parties to drive ticket sales for the Chicago event. The tension is palpable, especially with rumors from Fightful Select suggesting that NXT standout Sol Ruca is scheduled to be in town.

With two spots left in the Women’s Chamber match alongside heavy hitters like Rhea Ripley and Asuka, Ruca’s potential inclusion as a "wild card" could be a game-changer. If she manages to hit the "Sol Snatcher" inside the steel structure, it would be a career-defining moment on the road to WrestleMania.
