May 4, 2022, AEW Dynamite review:

AEW Dynamite opened this week with an Owen Hart foundation tournament qualifier between the world's best mustache Bobby Fish, and Jeff Hardy in his first AEW singles match. Adam Cole was also on commentary which I enjoy. Bobby worked over Hardy’s leg to start and was in control for most of the match. Jeff hit the comeback button and got his offense in. Bobby sold a twist of fate perfectly and it looked like Jeff was going to hit the Swanton bomb bu fish countered and hit an avalanche arm drag. Jeff kind of hit the whisper in the wind but the crowd was so hot it didn’t really matter. Small stuff like that doesn’t bother me much though. Jeff won with a Swanton bomb and the Yung Bucks came out afterwards and had a face to face with the Hardy Boys. This was a fun match with a hot crowd and a good way to start the show.

Next was a William Regal promo followed by the Blackpool Combat Club vs AFO. The only thing I would change about the BCC is I would have them all come out at the same time to the BCC theme. It isn't a big deal, but I personally would prefer that. The two teams broke out into a brawl before the match which has become the BCC’s thing at this point and the Blade got the advantage once they got into the ring. Quickly Danielson took over and tagged in Yuta. I love how over he has gotten since the BCC storyline started, I think he has great facial expressions and has fun matches. The match was entertaining and eventually I would like to see them enter a feud with someone like the House of Black. Yea,,,,do that AEW. Wheeler hit a big German suplex and got a great hot tag to Mox. Angelico and Wheeler got their shine in this match, and it checked all my boxes for a TV match.

Up next was a backstage interview with Starks and Hobbs. They got interrupted by Jurassic express and I like all these guys. Ricky Starks makes Jungle Boy look like a weak promo though. So, If I was AEW I wouldn’t have them speak in the same segment. Jungle boy challenged Starks to a one on one match for the FTW Championship in exchange for an AEW tag team title opportunity. I'm excited for both of these matches.

Keith Lee and Swerve had a backstage promo after the commercial break, and it was good. I really like both of them.

Up next was Wardlow vs MJF’s mystery opponent. I love Wardlow and MJF and this storyline has been fantastic if you ask me. Wardlow's entrance makes him look like a megastar and AEW is doing a great job of building a main event baby face and heel in this feud. MJF did the Flair strut and cut a funny heel promo like he always does. As we all expected W. Morrissey was Wardlow's mystery opponent and I’m not mad at this. I wish Lance Archer was used later in the story. Implying Big Cass is a step above Archer is kind of pitiful if you ask me. The crowd loves Wardlow so at this point it is impossible for him to have a stinker. The crowd carried this match like Morrissey isn't bad, but he isn't good ya know? Wardlow did a kick ass moonsault and ended the match with a powerbomb. After the match Wardlow ruined every security guard in the world. MJF proposed a match with the stipulation that if Wardlow won he would be let out of his contract. BUT! MJF has a few stipulations that will be announced in the only place that cheers Max, Long Island, New York.

Next was a backstage promo with the qualified competitors in the Owen Hart women's tournament. Every week these segments are the same with another woman thrown in. The segments are short, so it isn’t a big deal really, but I’d prefer if the segments had a little more substance.

After commercial The AEW World Champion Adam Page cut a promo. The pop was smaller than I expected because AEW is in the D.M.V (District of Maryland and Virginia) this week. I’m hyped for the world title match at Double or Nothing I honestly couldn’t tell you who I thought was going to win. Adam Page is a good promo, but some people think he’s boring. This promo made me even more excited for the match.

Next was a backstage promo with Sanjay, Lethal, and Satnam Singh. I like these two together I’m hoping Singh turns out good, he debuted in my hometown and it’s really going to suck if he turns out like Khali. Khali is a great dude, but he can barely walk. Appealing to a foreign audience won't work if it’s obviously shallow. I hope I’m wrong about Singh, because he has a great look IF he can go.

Next was Santana vs Jericho and Santana wasted zero time. He attacked Jericho during his entrance and this match was more of a fight, which was the right call. Both men bent the rules to inflict more pain which is what I want to see in a grudge match. The line between face and heel starts to blur when its personal. This match had its spots, Santana hit the three amigos and the crowd chanted “Eddie” which was nice. Santana got two count with the frog splash. Excalibur called a cutter a stunner and we can never let him live it down! Jericho won off a distraction with a low blow and Judas effect. The match was fun and a good showcase for Santana.

Next was a Samoa Joe promo.

Ass boys and Father Ass had a backstage segment with the acclaimed next. I loved this, the ass boys gave the acclaimed scissors and then (hand) scissored Billy Gunn. More of this please. 3/5
Brian Pillman Jr cut a promo accompanied by Griff and Julia Hart. He shouted out Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh and the promo was a lot better than I thought it would be! The lights went out and the House of Black beat their ass, The House of Black wanted Julia to turn on the blondes, but she was conflicted. Black got in her face and threw the chair, he ripped off her eyepatch and that’s when Death Triangle made the save.

Next was a backstage promo with Jade and her homies. I like all of them except Red Velvet, I do not find her entertaining at all. But mark Sterling is literally my favorite thing.

Ray Fenix vs Dante Martin was next and Wow. I missed Fenix so much. He is truly the best luchador walking on the planet. Dante is going to be a star some day and this match was incredible. Both of you can grab from the sweetie jar.

Next up a Darby and Sting promo. Darby needs work and Sting is usually much better. This “promo” just felt like a way to get them on the show,

After the break Thunder Rosa cut a promo on the stage. And it was fine. She called out Deeb and I’m excited for the match, but this promo felt like Stephanie Mcmahon and Brie Bella was having a promo battle and I hated that. The match will be great, but they should stick to edited video packages for these two.

Next was a John Silver Promo.

Next was YOURRRRRRRRRRR MAINNNNN EVENT of the evening. Mercedes Martinez vs Deonna Purazzo for the unified Ring of Honor Womens Championship. Deonna refused to shake Mercedes' hand which got me pumped. Deonna is great like always I’ve never been big on Martinez. I like the Dragon Sleeper. The match was boring, it for sure suffered from going on after Fenix vs Dante, but they didn’t do much to help it. I knew Mercedes was going to win, because Deonna loves being in Impact, I was just hoping she signed, and it was a surprise. Congratulations Mercedes Martinez! Please prove me wrong.

The show this week had its highs and lows but was more than good enough for me to tune in next week. If the main was better and Fenix vs Dante started the show I think this would be regarded as a top 30 Dynamite.
