Several of John Cena's most memorable WWE moments have taken place on the SummerSlam stage, but the 16-time World Champion won't be part of this year's event in Nashville, Tennessee.
The Chain Gang Commander headlined SummerSlam 2021 in Paradise, Nevada last year, challenging Roman Reigns for the WWE Universal Championship in a losing effort, thus missing out on the chance to set the record with 17 World Championships. This remains Cena's most recent televised match, to date... & the widely-rumoured match against Theory obviously isn't happening, now that we know the latter is challenging Bobby Lashley for the RAW United States Championship.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez reported that the Doctor of Thuganomics "apparently" isn't competing, because of his film schedule with the Peacemaker television series.
"I can confirm that being filmed right now is Peacemaker 2 & John Cena is involved," Alvarez stated. "He's working on Peacemaker 2 as we speak. I presume that's why there have been discussions of him doing SummerSlam... but then he showed up on Raw to announce 'someday I'll be back. I don't know when, don't know where but I'll be back someday.' Apparently, he's filming Peacemaker & that's why he can't do SummerSlam."
Peacemaker is filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia. WWE chairman Vince McMahon is reportedly flying out this week, to visit to visit with Cena in Hollywood North. It was also previously reported that the Federation was planning a Cena versus Theory trade for SummerSlam. The Head Honcho views Theory as the next John Cena & there have been several hints for a match between them. But it looks like the inevitable showdown will have to wait a while.
Interestingly, Theory told RAW United States champion Bobby Lashley last week that he plans to cash in his Money in the Bank contract against the winner of the Reigns-Brock Lesnar Last Man Standing bout for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.
