Hey everyone! Just a heads-up: tomorrow, March 8th, is International Women’s Day. It’s a huge day to celebrate women everywhere, so I wanted to get this out a day early. This way, we can all start the celebration a little bit sooner and think about the amazing ladies who put their bodies on the line in the ring for our entertainment.
Growing up as a female fan, wrestling didn’t always look like this. Today, women aren’t just a "side show" or a quick break—they are the main event. They are hard-hitters, great talkers, and the reason so many of us love this sport. Whether it’s WWE, AEW, TNA, or the NWA, the women are showing everyone exactly what it means to be a powerhouse.
A Historic Year for Tag Teams
One of the most exciting things about this year is that AEW finally has Women’s World Tag Team Champions! For a long time, fans were asking for this, and now it’s officially part of the history books. The Babes of Wrath (Harley Cameron and Willow Nightingale) became the first-ever champions after winning a massive tournament. Seeing them carry those belts shows that the division isn't just about one person at the top anymore—it’s about teams and a whole roster of talent working together.
The strength we see today didn't happen by accident. It came from years of women refusing to take "no" for an answer. Here is how some of our favorite stars feel about the power of women in wrestling today.
WWE: Pure Athleticism and Legacy
Charlotte Flair has been at the top for a long time, and she knows that being "the best" has nothing to do with gender. She’s all about the work ethic. She once said:
"I didn't want to just be the best female wrestler; I wanted to be the best wrestler, period."
Then you have Bianca Belair, who is still sadly sidelined. But the fans haven't forgotten! She’s proud of how far things have come, recently saying:
"It’s become the norm for us to go out there and kill it. I love that. It’s hard to do any more ‘firsts’ as women because we’ve already accomplished so much."
AEW: Fighting for Respect
In AEW, Thunder Rosa has always fought with a lot of heart. She sees every match as a way to prove that women are warriors. She once shared:
"That match changed the way people look at women’s wrestling. It wasn’t just about violence—it was about respect."
Thunder Rosa was referring to the iconic Unsanctioned Lights Out Match against Britt Baker, which took place on the March 17, 2021, episode of AEW Dynamite (titled St. Patrick's Day Slam).
Mercedes Moné also has a huge mission to make the sport better for everyone. She feels like this is her destiny:
"Equality in this business, making this business safe for women and respected for women... it’s what I was born to do."
TNA and NWA: Strength in All Shapes
Mickie James is a legend who has seen it all. She’s so proud of the shift from the old days to now. She’s noted:
"Women are making such incredible strides in the business right now and breaking down barriers."
"The Crush" Natalia Markova has been very vocal about what the NWA World Women's Championship (the "Burke") means in the modern era, especially after her big win at NWA 77.
When talking about being a champion in today's world, she often focuses on the idea of staying true to herself rather than following a mold. After she finally captured the title, she shared a simple but powerful sentiment that sums up her outlook:
"I did it my way!
She has publicly called for wrestlers to be "respectful to each other" and to focus on being original rather than copying the looks or gimmicks of others.
The Future: Stars to Watch
Jordynne Grace came up and has also been a huge inspiration for girls who want to be strong and muscular. She’s all about standing out and being proud of her power:
"I feel like if someone has big arms and they walk into a room... you’re gonna be like, ‘Okay, they’re dedicated.’"
Let’s Celebrate!
Seeing these women support each other and honor the legends who came before them is what this day is all about. They remind us that if you have the passion and the toughness, you can change the world.
So, tomorrow, make sure to give a shout-out to your favorite female wrestlers. To all the women in the ring and all the fans in the stands—Happy International Women’s Day! Let’s keep making some noise!
