For months, the WWE Universe watched as the beloved, if often confused, R-Truth was replaced by the serious, rebellious, and politically-minded Ron Killings. While the change of pace sparked intrigue, many fans clamored for the return of the seven-time 24/7 Champion.
Now, after successfully reverting to his R-Truth persona, the man behind the characters has explained the decision, stating that the sheer force of fan demand made the return inevitable.
In a recent interview, R-Truth (also known as Ron Killings) addressed critics who questioned why the WWE opted to drop the compelling Killings character after a relatively short run, framing the entire experiment as a necessary catalyst for the ultimate comeback.
"It went where it was supposed to," R-Truth stated emphatically. "Ron Killings created R-Truth. Those hundreds of millions of fans who spoke and up-roared. They wanted R-Truth back. Ron Killings was the rebellious one who spoke up for R-Truth."
The veteran competitor acknowledged the attention the Killings character garnered, but insisted that the unified reaction from the fanbase for his alter ego was unprecedented and too powerful to ignore.
"Ron Killings has been around for years, but people had never come together in lockstep like that. They did that for R-Truth. You feel me?" he asked. "I wanted Ron Killings to go where he was supposed to go. He made a statement; he had eyes on him. When John Cena came back, R-Truth came back. Ron Killings was the cavalry."
Essentially, R-Truth views the Ron Killings run as a strategic, albeit temporary, elevation of the man behind the gimmick, intended solely to build anticipation for the return of the fan-favorite. He even labeled the darker persona as an act of self-interest compared to the collective desire of the audience.
"I think [Ron Killings] was a selfish-type deal, more of a selfish move," he concluded, backing up his argument with overwhelming metrics. "I had more than 100 million views that wanted R-Truth. If numbers are real, that was the power of numbers."
In the end, it appears the decision to bring R-Truth back wasn't a creative failure, but rather a direct response to a massive, coordinated online movement. The "Ron Killings" run achieved its goal: it made the return of R-Truth a monumental event dictated by the WWE Universe.
