#2: "Rowdy" Roddy Piper: The Original Rebel

While Piper's wrestling persona was often billed as being from Glasgow, Scotland, and he had a well-known quote simply saying,

"I was born in Saskatoon,"

he did explicitly affirm his national pride in an interview about his Canadian heritage.

Here is the quote:

"I'm darn proud of being Canadian,"

he says.

"I was born on the Canadian National Railways. I lived in The Pas Manitoba. They had a little red shack by the tracks... I call it a shack, but it was home for me for seven, eight or nine years of my life... But it's true when people ask, 'Where are you from,' I say, 'I'm from Canada.'"

Piper is a man whose name is synonymous with the Golden Era of wrestling and electric microphone work: "Rowdy" Roddy Piper.

Born Roderick George Toombs in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Piper forged one of the most compelling and controversial personas in history. His "Hot Rod" character—a kilt-wearing villain with a volcanic temper—was pure box office. While he may have played up his Scottish heritage, Piper’s deep Canadian roots were always a point of pride.

Before podcasts and social media, there was "Piper's Pit." This legendary segment was the stage for some of the most memorable and controversial moments ever, including the infamous coconut smash with Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka.

Piper didn't need a world title to be a headliner. He was the essential antagonist to Hulk Hogan, main-eventing the first-ever WrestleMania and becoming arguably the greatest heel professional wrestling has ever seen. His ability to generate intense, unscripted heat made him an unforgettable figure, cementing his legacy long before his 2005 WWE Hall of Fame induction.

Sadly Piper passed away unexpectedly on July 31, 2015, at the age of 61 in his sleep at his home in Hollywood, California. The cause of death determined as cardiopulmonary arrest caused by a pulmonary embolism (a blood clot on the lung) and hypertension (high blood pressure). Halos up for this Canadian wrestling legend. Gone but never forgotten.

Finally we have reached the number one spot on the list, it should come as no surprise who takes this coveted spot. A ture legend a absolute Canadian wrestling icon the excellence of execution!

#1: Bret "The Hitman" Hart: The Excellence of Execution

There could only be one. The man who set the standard for a generation and remains a blueprint for technical mastery: Bret "The Hitman" Hart is the undisputed Greatest Canadian Wrestler of All Time!

Hailing from the legendary Hart Family in Calgary, Alberta, "The Excellence of Execution" brought a level of crispness, precision, and psychology to the ring that was unmatched. He helped usher in the "New Generation Era," shifting the focus of the mainstream from cartoonish characters to serious, athletic competition.

Hart rarely had a bad match. His signature Sharpshooter submission and fluid in-ring style delivered countless five-star classics that are still studied by wrestlers today.

As a five-time WWF World Heavyweight Champion, Bret Hart was a true international superstar. In the latter stages of his WWE run, he brilliantly leveraged his Canadian heritage, becoming a scathing anti-American hero back home and a despised villain everywhere else. It was an angle that culminated in the most talked-about exit in wrestling history.

His pride was clear, reflecting on his career:

“I like to think in my own way that I did my part to put Calgary on the map, and I represented well. I think that is a credit to my mom and dad.”

For his in-ring prowess, his championship accolades, and his undeniable cultural impact, "The Hitman" stands as the peak of Canadian excellence.

That concludes my definitive countdown of the Top 10 Greatest Canadian Wrestlers of All Time!

Stay tuned for my next count down where I cover the best UK Wrestlers of all time.
