The Rock Might Return to WWE Sooner Than Later?

Many WWE fans are holding out hope for a dream WrestleMania 39 match between Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and the company's top star, Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns.

The Premium Live Event will take place at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California on the weekend of April 1st. Not only is there belief that The People's Champion could suit up for a match at The Showcase of Immortals, but there are rumblings that the Federation could ask Hall of Famer 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin to wrestle as well. It's apparently possible that The Most Electrifying Man in Sports Entertainment returns several months before WrestleMania 39 weekend, to set up the dream showdown with the Head of the Table.

Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t Louis Dangoor of GiveMeSport), Dave Meltzer stated "There’s so many different things that they can do at this Royal Rumble to build up to WrestleMania. Obviously everyone would expect Cody (Rhodes), there’s always the chance of Dwayne, others that can be thrown in there."

It certainly would make sense to bring back The Rock for a marquee pay-per-view like the Royal Rumble. WWE would need ample time to build up a marquee, once-in-a-lifetime match like Roman versus Johnson, after all. But of course, a lot of this will depend on the Former WWF World Heavyweight Champion's availability. He'll be occupied with his duties as a co-owner of the XFL on top of his acting schedule.

The Tribal Chief is the longest-reigning Universal Champion in the Federation's history, and he's closing in on the three-year anniversary of his last pinfall loss. WWE has pushed Reigns through the roof, and a showdown with The Rock would only improve his status as an all-time great.

The Rock's Last WWE Match

The People's Champion's most recent WWE match took place nearly seven years ago at WrestleMania 32. He defeated Wyatt Family member Erick Rowan in just six seconds, via pinfall, much to the excitement of the crowd of AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The Most Electrifying Man in Sports Entertainment was subsequently surrounded by the Wyatt Family members, but John Cena showed up unexpectedly and helped his former enemy fight them off.
