Triple H and Stephanie McMahon showcased just how integral women's wrestling is going to be during this new era of WWE. Six women featured throughout Raw in an angle revolving around Bianca Belair's title... then seven different female superstars competed in a gauntlet match on SmackDown to determine Liv Morgan's Clash at the Castle challenger.
Carmella Injured During WWE Live Event
All those superstars, and there wasn't a spot for Carmella on WWE TV this week. Don't despair, Mella fans. The Princess of Staten Island was booked in a triple threat match with Belair and Asuka at a live event on Saturday night. Unfortunately for Carmella, she didn't get much chance to show why she should be a centerpiece of the new WWE due to an injury.
Various reports from fans in attendance at the show in North Charleston, South Carolina (via Inside The Ropes claim it all seemed to be part of the proceedings initially. The former LA Lakers Cheerleader rolled out of the ring and was taunted by her opponents, as you can see in these photos. However, moments after that, officials came to ringside and threw up an 'X' with their hands, a symbol used in wrestling to indicate to those in the back that someone is legitimately hurt.
Walked Back To The Locker Room, But Legitimately Hurt
Carmella was able to walk back to the locker room with the aid of those who come to help her, but those same officials appeared to be shielding her eyes from the arena's bright lights. Perhaps an indication that the former Smackdown Women's Champion suffered a concussion, but that hasn't been confirmed just yet.
As for how it happened, the same reports from fans suggest the injury occurred when Mella hit her head on the corner of the ring, as the RAW Women's Champion attempted to perform a Sunset Flip on her. The match she was supposed to compete in was quickly changed to a singles bout between Belair and the Empress of Tomorrow. An interesting dynamic, since the pair appeared to be on the same side as they attempted to fend off Bayley, Dakota Kai, and Iyo Sky on Monday Night RAW this week.
Now I'm not saying I've been using a voodoo doll to "encourage" misfortune, but...
