Raw review: May 16, 2022

The show started with an MVP promo before the steel cage match between Omos and Bobby Lashley. The promo was fine, MVP doesn’t have any legitimate motivation so it’s hard-to-get behind it. MVP is great and Omos ha a natural “swagger” to him, and I think with hard work and patience he could become a reliable upper mid card guy. Lashley has gotten much better at promos and Bobby doesn’t need MVP anymore, but I really liked them together. Cedric Alexander jumped Lashley during his entrance and it turned into a 2 on 1 brawl. This didn't affect the match at all, so it just felt like a way to get to the first commercial break. But I do think this Cedric Alexander stuff has potential and he is great so I’m all for him getting TV time.

After commercial Omos had the advantage and MVP gets a cheap shot in. This entire thing has been weird. Like Lashley, only gets momentum after they cheat. Like Lashley comes out on top after being jumped in his entrance and immediately goes on offense after a cheap shot by MVP. It's not a big deal, it's just you'd think it would be the opposite. This wasn’t the worst cage match I’ve ever seen, that would be the Punjabi Prison match. Which one Dean? Both you twat! I enjoyed the spot with MVP getting a little payback and the match got better after that but these two don’t have much in ring chemistry. This match wasn’t very good unfortunately. But it wasn’t all terrible. Except the finish, that finish actually sucks.

Winner: Nobody (Bobby Lashley)

Up next was Austin Theory vs Mustafa Ali for the United States Championship. I love that they announced he is the youngest U.S champion in history. What I don’t love is the only title match on the show being second on the card. There is also no story going into it so I know it will end in some kind of no finish. Theory cut a promo with his tongue tied behind his back and announced the Miz was guest referee. I told you it would be some kind of crap finish. I swear this episode is like when someone buys you bubble gum, waits for you to blow a bubble you're proud of and then pops the bubble while making eye contact with you. Holy shit. So apparently this match is Veer Mahaan vs Ali. Congratulations WWE, I am now unhappy to see Veer. The Mysterios returned to save Ali but not even that saved this mess.

Winner: Veer Mahaan

Next was Riddle by himself against Jimmy Uso with Jey at ringside. Both guys can go when given time and this story is being told in a weird way, but I do want to see where it goes. Uso got the advantage early and held up both the titles after throwing Riddle into the stairs. Jey got caught trying to cheat and was ejected. Riddle of course got the roll up win. The right winner, but the wrong finish.

Winner: Riddle

Next was a backstage promo with Liv Morgan and Los Lotharios. They tried to kiss her but Bullet Club made them leave and teamed up with Liv Morgan, Liv said “ She would think about it” This is great, I’m really getting into this story now.

🖕🏽🖕🏽🖕🏽🖕🏽

After commercial Judgement Day cut a backstage promo. Damien Priest has found his stride in this role, and I think he is playing his part well. Rhea cut a fine promo too. Then Edge once again kills it. This promo really was great. Go out of your way to find it.

Next was Bullet Club w/ Liv Morgan vs Los Lotharios. This match was fun but what the hell is the “Cody Counter” this match heated up after the break and had a great hot tag to Balor. This match was a good time.

Winner: Bullet Club

Next was an amazing backstage segment with Kevin Owens and Alpha Academy. I love Chad Gable and Kevin Owens is consistently amazing.

🖕🏽🖕🏽🖕🏽🖕🏽

Up Next was Alexa Bliss with a new theme song. I like this song and I’m 80% sure I understand this gimmick so I’m all for it. What I’m not all for is a rematch without story progression. Sonya tried to cheat the whole match and eventually Alexa won. Sonya got the visual pin though; this match was alright, and Sonya slapped a ref after the match which was funny. But please give Alexa something better than a DDT as a finisher.

Winner: Alexa Bliss

Next was the “long anticipated” Cody Rhodes promo. The neck tattoo still looks awful no matter how much money you spend on suits and pyro. good promo. Rollins vs Rhodes 3: Hell in a Cell!

🖕🏽🖕🏽🖕🏽🖕🏽

Next was a backstage Asuka promo. What the hell? I hate that so much. Asuka is phenomenal and she looks like a complete joke.

🖕🏽

Next was Ezekiel vs Chad Gable. Kevin Owens was on commentary, and he is the best. Chad Gable is so good, and Ezekiel is good as a character. Ezekiel uses a lot of rest holds but Kevin Owens is what really made this match for me. Nah, Ezekiel out mat wrestled an Olympian I’m done with this.

Winner: Ezekiel

Next was a 24/7 title segment and Tamina gives me a physically painful headache. All of this was meaningless filler and the best part about it was the James Ellsworth reference. But it did set up a match down the road.

🖕🏽

Next was Lacey Evans and she was playing face which is good. I’ve heard reports about her being a heel and that wouldn't make any freaking sense. She cut a great promo and there isn't much else to it.

🖕🏽🖕🏽🖕🏽🖕🏽🖕🏽

Riddle and the Usos both cut good backstage promos hyping their match Friday. I would get excited, but they wouldn’t do this for real on TV

🖕🏽🖕🏽🖕🏽

Next was the Main event Raw Womens Championship #1 contender match between Becky Lynch and Asuka. I like the long-term story of Lynch going crazy. This match was obviously great. The crowd was dead for this match unfortunately. Becky threw Asuka into Bianca Belair at ringside and tried to use the distraction to cheat but Aduka hit Becky with the mist and got the pin.

Winner: Asuka

This show was a mixed bag honestly. It wasn’t good or bad. In comparison to the last few weeks, it's very bad but life is all about moving forward and I can't wait to move forward to Dynamite Wednesday. This weeks show gets a
