WWE Hall of Famer Proposed Being Unified WWE Champion, Before Roman Reigns

Smackdown Universal champion Roman Reigns defeated RAW's WWE titlist Brock Lesnar, combining the 2 championships to become the WWE Unified Universal Champion. That hasn't been a very popular move with fans, especially since The Tribal Chief has largely been absent since doing that. Just 1 title defense to his name so far, a match against Riddle on SmackDown a few weeks ago.

Somebody who probably quite likes both titles being under 1 Superstar's roof is WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley. Not because he's a Reigns fan, which seems likely... but because the Hardcore Legend wanted to be the Unified WWE Champion all the way back in 2004. Mickles thought it was such a good idea, all those years ago, he pitched how he envisioned it coming together to Vince McMahon.

While it's a story Foley has told before, he went into a lot more detail during the latest episode of Foley Is Pod. It begins with him winning the 2004 Royal Rumble. “Because I'm neither a Raw or SmackDown guy, I would like to challenge both champions, to a 3-way dance, to unify the Title... & win that as well,” Foley explained, as he ran down exactly what he said to Head Honcho Vince McMahon.

“He looked @ me and said, 'Mick, I have no interest whatsoever in doing that.' I said okay, I've got this idea for Randy Orton,” the former TNA & WWF World champion went on to say. It appears the whole thing was an elaborate plan to feud with the Apex Predator, when Mickles returned in 2004. Pitch a ludicrous idea the boss would never say yes to... then when he says no, tell him what you actually want. Something he probably would have said no to, had it been the 1st idea... but he says yes, because in comparison, it's nowhere near as outlandish.

Worst case scenario in that instance, McMahon says no to both. Best case scenario, albeit very unlikely, is he loves the 1st idea & Foley if good to lift both titles @ WrestleMania 20. The other men in that match with him, would have presumably been Eddie Guerrero {who won the WWE Title the month prior @ No Way Out} & World Heavyweight Champion Triple H. It also may have meant we never got the match between Foley & Orton @ Backlash that year, 1 that the Viper labels as among the best of his career.
